1. Eco Park

Eco Park, also known as Prakriti Tirtha, is a sprawling urban park located in New Town, West Bengal, India, and stands as the largest park in the country. Encompassing a vast area of 480 acres (190 ha), it includes an impressive 104-acre (42 ha) island surrounded by water bodies and wetlands. The park’s development was initiated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in July 2012, with the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) overseeing its construction in collaboration with various government agencies responsible for implementing different projects within the park.

The park is organized into three distinct sections: ecological zones featuring wetlands, grasslands, and urban forests; theme parks and expansive open spaces; and urban recreational areas. Within Eco Park, there are various subsections dedicated to different plant species. The park boasts diverse attractions such as a wildflower meadow, bamboo garden, tropical tree garden resembling a rainforest, bonsai garden, tea garden, cactus walk, heliconia garden, butterfly garden, play area, and amphitheater. Furthermore, there are plans to develop an eco-resort through a public-private partnership, which will include an area showcasing the state’s handicrafts. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially inaugurated the park on 29 December 2012.

Eco Park is situated at coordinates 22°35′55″N 88°28′03″E, approximately 10 kilometers from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. It is located along a major arterial road within Action Area-2 of New Town, West Bengal. The park is bordered by notable landmarks: to the north are the Biswa Bangla Convention Center and the Museum of Modern Art, Kolkata; to the east lies the central business district and the International Financial Hub; and to the south and west are the Jatragachi/Hatiara settlement areas.

2. Nicco Park

Nico Park, situated in Jheel Mill, Sector IV of Bidhannagar, West Bengal, India, was established to draw tourists to the state by offering both family-friendly and educational entertainment. Since its opening on October 13, 1991, it has earned the nickname “Disneyland of West Bengal.” Spanning 40 acres, Nico Park boasts over 35 attractions and welcomes 24 million visitors annually, all while maintaining an eco-friendly environment.

The concept of an amusement park in the Calcutta area emerged during the 300th anniversary of the city’s founding. Rajeev Kaul, the current chairman of the Nico Group, was visiting Disneyland in the US with his family while the state government was organizing the tri-centenary celebrations. Upon his return, Kaul was questioned about his trip to America when his presence was needed for the planning. Allegedly, he responded, “I went to see if I could create a Disneyland here.” What initially seemed like an excuse for his absence turned into reality through a collaboration with the West Bengal government.

Following the initiation of the idea, the West Bengal government and Rajeev Kaul committed to establishing an amusement park in Kolkata. They formed Nico Parks and Resorts Limited (NPRL), a joint venture involving National Insulated Cable Corporation Limited (now Nico Corporation Limited) representing the private sector, and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Limited (WBIDC) along with the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Limited (WBTDC) representing the government. This joint sector company was established on March 17, 1989, and received its business commencement certificate on March 31, 1989. NPRL’s initial mission was to construct a recreational complex on Kolkata’s outskirts, to be owned and managed by the company. The project also benefited from technical guidance provided by Blackpool Leisure and Amusement Consultancy Ltd, UK.

Rajeev Kaul approached Geoffrey Thompson, the owner and managing director of Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, for financial assistance. Although Thompson did not provide funding, he did offer the expertise of Blackpool Leisure and Amusement Consultancy Ltd, which specialized in land surveying, design, and safety advice. Inspired by the river caves at Blackpool, Kaul incorporated a similar attraction into Nico Park. Years later, impressed by the success of Nico Park, Kaul suggested refurbishing the caves at Blackpool. Thompson agreed to this proposal.

Two years after NPRL was founded, and with an investment of approximately Rs 8 crore, Nico Park launched with 13 rides. Additionally, it upgraded the toy train from the former Jhilmil Park, significantly enhancing it to provide passengers with a comprehensive tour of the entire park.

Nikko Park’s educational entertainment program guarantees that families enjoy themselves while also gaining knowledge. The park’s layout is tailored for educational purposes, featuring numerous informative displays. Each ride entrance includes an explanation of the scientific principles behind its operation. Additionally, the park’s solar energy village demonstrates the use of various renewable energy sources in daily life. Consistent with its eco-friendly focus, Indo American Hybrid Seeds Limited offers a variety of plants for sale and operates a greenhouse within the park.

Aquatica, spanning 705,000 square feet (17 acres), is a water theme park located in Kochpukur within the Bhangar CD Block of Baruipur subdivision, in South 24 Parganas district, Greater Kolkata, India. Established in 1999, it stands as one of the largest water amusement parks in Kolkata and Eastern India. Aquatica is particularly popular during Holi. Additionally, a new water theme park, Wet ‘O’ Wild, has recently opened near Nico Park in the Salt Lake City area.

Aquatica, a water theme park, is situated in Kochpukur, near Thakdari (Rajarhat) and New Town (Action Area – I). The park is easily accessible via public transport, particularly the 12C/2 bus from Howrah station. This bus travels through Ultadanga along VIP Road to Baguiati Jora Mandir, makes a U-turn, passes through Keshtapur Bazar, and reaches New Town under Box Bridge (near Technopolis, connecting Sector V and New Town), before finally arriving at Aquatica.

Box Bridge is well-connected by public transport from both VIP Road and EM Bypass. Regular auto-rickshaw services operate from Box Bridge to Aquatica, and numerous taxis are available, although drivers may request an additional fare for trips to the park.

There are two main driving routes to Aquatica. The first route involves driving along Canal Road from Box Bridge. The second route starts at MAR, the coconut plantation in New Town, accessed from More. Drive towards Unitech, take a right at the crossing in front of the New Town police station, and follow the road for 2 km to reach Aquatica. Both routes are considered decent by Kolkata standards. Alternatively, you can drive directly from the coconut plantation to the Balaka residence and then follow Canal Road or use one of the many roads in New Town.

Aquatica features a variety of exciting rides, such as the Black Hole, Wave Pool, Niagara Falls, Surf Racer, Tornado, and Aqua Dance Floor. The park hosts frequent parties and fashion shows, particularly during the winter months. Additionally, it offers 55 well-appointed rooms, along with a conference hall, party hall, board room, and food court.
